Rearward, its roofline tapers slightly all the way to the rear of the car, while the bottom line of the rear windows tapers upward slightly, creating something a of teardrop shape. For example, the turbocharged inline six weighs approximately 150 lbs less than an equally powerful eight-cylinder displacing 4. What's best is its linear quality, or the steady supply of acceleration-producing torque at any speed. No problem with shift response when you do it yourself. While a number of less expensive models have a tall rear quarter, the 3 Series doesn't, and that makes a big difference in terms of the car's aesthetic appeal. For 40 years, the 3 Series had defined that mix: rear-wheel drive, great steering feel and balance between the front and rear axles. Then there is the Steptronic manual mode, which allows manual gear selection by toggling the shift lever to the left.
The question is, does this new retractable hardtop have the great dynamics of the 335i coupe? The character of any coupe is reflected in its profile. Controls for the climate control as well as the audio and navigation systems are within easy reach of the front passenger. Redesigned for the 2006 model year, the 3 Series Sport Wagon is identical to the sedan from the center roof pillar forward. Burr walnut trim is now standard, and there's a lot of it on the dash and doors. The manual adjustments work great, though we recommend using them when the car is parked. The 335i Coupe accelerates from 0 - 60 mph in just 5. This new high-performance engine gives the light, aerodynamically sculpted Coupe truly outstanding acceleration and flexibility on the road.
Together they provide a margin of safety for any situation in which the car might reach the limits of driving physics. No matter how seductive the styling, no matter how compelling the dynamics, we know that somewhere squads of designers and engineers are toiling to make a good thing even better. Moreover, the new doors address one of our biggest gripes with previous 3 Series cars. There will be three U. With 0 - 60 mph acceleration in just 6. In addition to the classic proportions, the shoulder, character and sill lines serve to enhance the sleek appearance. With six speeds, the same advantages apply here as with the manual.
The hood line continues past the windshield pillars all the way to the rear, while the roof line is rounder than before. The convertible also has Brake Fade Compensation and Start-Off Assistant, the latter of which will hold the car briefly when on an incline to prevent it from rolling backward after taking your foot off the brake pedal. In all, there are more than 600 choices in equipping the 3 Series sedans. The 335i comes with an upgraded system called Logic 7. Most of the increased exterior dimensions translate into more interior space, particularly in the back seat. The optional leather is soft and thick. It's also almost two inches lower and, surprisingly, 1.
The new engine in the 328i Coupe offers 230 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. The 3 Series sedans no longer have a keyed ignition switch, relying instead on a slot-type key fob and a starter button. Occupants also get to enjoy a louder version of the 335i's engine soundtrack when the top is down; the twin-turbo inline-six, in tandem with the dual exhaust system, makes a sweet sound. This high-tech engine is the first in mass production with a magnesium alloy engine block, to trim weight. With the hood extending beyond the headlights as such, the characteristic four round headlights appear to have been cut-off at the top creating a sense of powerful, concentrated focus. Last but certainly not least, the impressive increase in power on the twin turbo engine versus a conventional normally aspirated six-cylinder comes without any significant increase in fuel consumption. But all this technology can be a double-edged sword, at least to old-time 3 Series buyers.
The designers' objective was to give the new 3 Series Coupe a balanced and harmonious look. Yet what characterizes the current 3 Series sedans as much as anything is its high-technology. Send Mike an Hide full review. The automatic can be a bit slow to react with an appropriate gear change in Normal mode, but leaving it Sport mode pretty much solves the problem, with a slight payback in more abrupt shifting. The 2007 3 Series sedans are true to their predecessors, with a couple of caveats, in our view.
The 335i Coupe will be joined in the U. By virtually every objective measure, from space to horsepower to performance, these are the best 3 Series sedans ever. Dynamic Brake Control automatically maximizes brake pressure whenever required in an emergency stop. We aren't completely enamored with everything inside, but we have few real gripes. Right: they'll make that 3.
Its cars are handling benchmarks in the industry, yet their compliant suspension tuning makes them comfortable for everyday driving. There's no question that the 335i sedan carries forward the class-leading dynamic standards established by the 330i-smooth ride quality, right-now responses, laser-precise steering, powerful, fade-free braking-amplified by a superb new engine that generates big horsepower and, arguably more significant, an abundance of torque delivered over a curve that's as high and flat as a mountain mesa. Besides the suite of power equipment like windows, locks and mirrors, there's a master power-window switch that lowers and raises all of the windows at once. It weighs about 400 pounds more than the coupe, and even though some of that mass goes toward chassis-stiffening efforts, rougher roads make the convertible's A- shudder slightly when the top is down. No one will feel short-changed on performance if they make the more economical choice of the 328i. The high-performance brake system requires 17-inch wheels to match the larger diameter of the brake discs which ensure outstanding stopping power and deceleration.
Like the sedan, the '07 coupe represents an evolutionary design and engineering update on an attractive and competent predecessor. The horizontally flowing lines accentuate the wide track and low stance of the new Coupe. There are actually two: The standard setup has a single bubble, or hood, over the instrument cluster, while the optional navigation system has a dash that accommodates the system with a second hood. Redesign shows mercy on everybody's favorite car. It sometimes seems balkier than a regular key.
