With a 28 mpg highway rating, would this small engine be less thirsty than a typical V6? Few automakers have taken a direct shot at Toyota's green icon, the Prius hybrid. We cover the C-Max Energi in Cars. Ford has a long way to go before it gets there, but the C-Max is a start. It is quite satisfying to have the system tell me I have returned 999. It's essentially a very tall hatchback, with a roofline 6.
I was shocked — 64. Ford has targeted the plus-sized Prius v as the C-Max's primary competitor, but it's priced closer to the Prius, so you might shop it against both — or a well-equipped Honda Insight, for that matter. Still, that's substantially more than the Chevrolet Volt's 10. Because of its larger battery, the Energi offers only 19. I use electric only off the freeway and hybrid mode while on highways and long stretches of road between the speeds of 45-65. The regenerative brakes feel linear enough, as hybrid brakes go.
Our Titanium test car came equipped with the larger of the two turbo engines, a 2. Our test car had the latest version of the automaker's much-maligned MyFord Touch. This is almost disconcerting for those used to driving or riding in a low, cockpit-style cabin. From the dashboard and doors to the steering-wheel trim and headliner, the C-Max boasts handsome materials where other hybrids cheap out. Ford's standard MyKey system allows parents to limit vehicle speed, stereo volume and other features when their teens drive. It's smooth and quiet, and switches between gas and electric power nearly seamlessly. The hybrid offers a fair 24.
Toyota's halo hybrid has so much brand equity that the automaker could probably get people to buy a Prius pickup or roadster. Reliability so far has been a black hole — much worse than average for both the C-Max and the plug-in C-Max Energi. I need someone at Ford to reach out to me and assist in a proactive manner so we can put this matter to rest. Drivers can pair their Android or Apple smartphones to use streaming audio via Bluetooth and other features. That figure splits the difference between the Prius' 39.
Microphones in the cabin monitor road and wind noise, and send noise cancellation waves as needed through speakers in the doors. While the MyFord Touch system is good in theory, certain aspects are annoying, including not-so-accurate voice recognition and menu options that aren't immediately intuitive. For example, if the vehicle is nearing a frequent destination, it will remain in electric-only mode to save fuel. The front seats are quite comfortable, and should do well for a longer road trip. More cautious drivers should be able to squeeze out those last few mpg without too much trouble, as we did average 46. . The C-Max's abundant headroom is useful; I could elevate my seat high without my head scraping the ceiling in our moonroof-free test car.
Overall, materials are attractive and appear durable. Alternatives to the hybrid include Honda Insight, Toyota Prius and Prius v wagon. However, as with other Ford steering wheels, the myriad controls look confusing and cluttered. Ford has been quite good at staying ahead of the curve when it comes to automotive buying trends. Show full review Editor's note: Estimated mileage ratings have been lowered to reflect a June 2014 Ford audit of this car's stated mileage. For the record, during the last three years I have leased both a 2010 Prius and 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid, and consider myself an experienced hyper-miler. Send Kelsey an Hide full review.
Transmission: Automatic Color:Black Interior Color: Black Average Vehicle Review: 4. Earlier plans to bring a seven-seat C-Max minivan from overseas were scrapped, and now the C-Max comes as a hybrid and a C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, each with five seats. The instrument panel, climate controls and center stack feature the same angles, vents and knobs. All auto reviewers seem to think that we only buy cars for the drive to work and back. Even shorter people feel tall in the car, especially in the passenger seat, which doesn't have a height adjustment feature. We cover the C-Max Energi in Cars.
The screen on the left side of the speedometer told us when we were driving in a way that maximized energy savings, and when we could do better. Braking is confident although a tad grabby, as is characteristic of regenerative brakes. A plug-in Energi model is even available for folks looking to really minimize trips to the pump, although the considerable extra price makes it a somewhat questionable value. Still, the combined 188 horsepower provides enough oomph to beat semi-trucks from the merging lane. Ride quality is firm, but not overly stiff.
Alas, the dashboard controls are bad news. Although each model occupies a separate niche, they compare quite well in price, practicality, and performance. A month later, the automaker promised aerodynamic modifications, lower-friction engine oil and more efficient transmission gearing for the 2014 C-Max to improve mileage further. Given the somewhat disappointing performance, we had high hopes for the fuel efficiency that the EcoBoost engine would provide. Steering is comfortable, and we didn't notice any egregious body roll while weaving through turns along the Northern California coastline. Front seats sit very high and upright. The voice-recognition software fouls up more address entries than it gets right.
