We also changed out the thermostat on the outside of the engine block. The instrument cluster micro processor communicates with other modules in the vehicle over the Class 2 serial data line. This requires a trip to the dealer for mileage re-programming. I have had a certified gm guy look at it, but he's at a loss because it wont replicate these conditions while hes looking at it. Replaced the resistor, relay, and motor.
Wonder how long into the future this procedure will be done using these instructions. I again took the vehicle to the dealer who again said it was the instrument cluster. I have to put it in neutral at the light and rev the engine to keep it running with the other foot on the brake. You fix the things on your vehicle as you can afford to or if it makes the vehicle totally inoperable. Put everything back together and do a happy dance. So as a test to know if your speed sensor may be the cause of your speedometer problems you simply need to pay attention to how your automatic transmission is behaving.
However, gm knows that they put a defective and unsafe and faulty instrument cluster in these trucks. When I hit 0 it will be fine for a while. There has been several recalls on this truck and you bust your ass figuring out how to avoid fixing the problem instead of busting your ass to figure out a way to fix the problems,no wonder you needed a bail out. However, because his vehicle was over 70,000 miles, he would have to repair it at his own expense. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the instrumental panel connectors needed to be replaced.
You can order the part from Rockauto. Now it is not reading my speed correctly at all. The second and perhaps better option is to have a factory transmission temperature gauge installed into your original instrument cluster. The vehicle was not repaired. There is a recall on the gauge cluster.
This problem is so widespread and gm is ignoring it. For that year, it's an easy fix anybody can do, Chevy designed a great panel that year. I also own a 2001 Chevy Tahao same motor 5. I opened the cluster and played with the gages moved the Mph to max and back to 0. Chris answered 3 years ago Folks I need your help, same issues + so my cluster gages dont work not a big deal right i used the led read out of my trip miles to gage my gas. I had gone so far as checking on a replacement cluster to try and cure the problem, sure glad i did a little more looking. No deaths or injuries were ever attributed to the erratic gauges, but owners of the vehicles felt the problem was a safety concern. It didn't happen again until a couple of months later. It would intermittently read no oil pressure even though the oil level was adequate.
Was not notified of Recall even though I had the truck in the dealer for Electrical problem of back tail light time after time. I'm going to try to do some further study to see how it can be tested. Re-programming of the instrument cluster is necessary to make the new gauge functional and should be included as part of the gauge upgrade service.
