Id venture to say any C6 with a slip in modulator. It got new composite plates and valving. This gave it the capability to handle 475 ft-lb of torque. If not, where do I go next. Having said that, there are specialty lubes, such as Royal Purple and maybe Trick Shift, that may be made by small companies and might be quite different from others. Trick shift is not type F, it is nowhere near as harsh. Thanks for all the help. I got frustrated and parked it for the night and then drove it to work this morning and when I started out, it still had the issues but when I got into town 8 miles away from home it started shifting totally normal ie downshifting to first at a stop etc. TransX will not hurt anything.
Buying a used 1986 Ford F-150 transmission from a non-reliable dealer is an unnecessary risk. As a rule if I remember correctly if you added Dexron to a type F trans it would be mushy shifting. To aid in shift quality and long term durability, it was the first automatic transmission designed to use the Borg-Warner flexible shift band. There is a difference in brands.
